The Chemin de Fer model was originally applied to the doors of the posh, French railcars. The old models were slightly smaller in size and therefore slightly less suitable for interior doors. The current Chemin de fer model is made slightly larger (100mm or 110mm long) making it suitable for everyday use.
The model was originally made of bronze or brass and is now also available in cast iron and stainless steel.
